Course Description

SED 464- Middle School Curriculum & Organization

This course is designed to support pre-service teachers in the Secondary Education Program and those in the Elementary Education or Special Education Programs in preparation for teaching in a middle school setting. Middle school is the often overlooked, yet critical component, of K-12 education, and much attention is now being given to improving the quality of the educational experience at this level. There is, especially, a renewed focus on the distinct needs of the young adolescent and the best practices for teaching these unique learners. The course will focus on the teacher’s role as an advocate for young adolescents and the knowledge and skills needed to teach effectively at the middle school level.

In addition, this course is a designated “technology-infused” course; this means that the course will include purposeful integration of the NETS-T (National Education Technology Standards for Teachers) and will include many experiences and assignments designed to encourage effective methods of teaching and learning with technology. It is recommended that you bring a laptop computer or other electronic device (iPad, tablet) to class on a regular basis.
